Matt Skelton Vs Martin Rogan

Both fighters look ready to go at the beginning of the fight. This is a superb domestic match up, both boxers are very tough and are the best of the British Heavyweight Division, except David Haye.
Round 1: Both boxers start this fight like it's a one round fight, starting extremely fast, throwing bombs to the body and head. Matt Sketlon has probably edged the 1st round, keeping Rogan on the ropes. But some good punches from Rogan too, rocking Skelton on a few occasions.
Round 2: With both men giving a huge effort in the first, the fight now slows with Rogan fighting smart and landing some good punches to the body of Skelton along the ropes. Good round for Martin Rogan, outworking Matt Skelton.

Rogan is coming on strong, Skelton is cut and looks very tired. Skelton resort back to the jab. Massive round for Martin Rogan, he caught Skelton with some huge punches!
Round 6: Rogan comes on strong again with pure determination, closing the distance and landing punches along the ropes. Great shot to the face by Rogan which hurt Skelton, Roagan's workrate is great, he will not be denied, putting in way more work then Rogan, Rogans Round.

Round 8: Rogan starts strong, gets caught with some punches by Skelton. Rogan senses Skelton is tired and picks up the pace, Rogan lands some massive punches, which look like they could stop the fight, but Skelton finds some reserves and comes back with some huge punches of his own. Both fighters trading on pure will, Rogan coming on stronger, pummeling Skelton on the ropes. Huge round for both fighters, Specially Rogan!
Round 9: good right by Rogan. Skelton jabbing and moving, trying to get some energy back. The pace has dropped dramatically, both fighters look tired. Good upper cut by Skelton. Rogan still coming forward, Skelton catches Rogan with some good punches to end the round.
Round 10: Rogan looks tired on his feet. Skelton lands a good jab. Good shot by Rogan, followed by some decent punches from Skelton. Both fighters are feeling the pace. Skelton Catches Rogan with 3 unanswered punches to end the 10th round.
Round 11: Rogan looks tired, getting clipped with a few shots, but comes on strong with some huge punches along the ropes, sending Skelton accross the ring and Skelton goes down!! Skelton gets up and is allowed to continue, but Rogan comes on strong, sensing the end is near, catches Skelton with some massive punches, causing the referee to stop the fight!
The new Commonwealth Champion MARTIN ROGAN!!!!!!
Great fight for Martin Rogan, he showed the true heart of a lion, and would not be denied. Rogan deserved that win so much, he really put everything into this fight and it payed off. A great win for the down to earth Irishman.

Tony Jeffries Wins His First Professional Fight
Tony Jeffries Wins His First Professional Fight
Tony Jeffries has got his professional career off to a flying start by defeating his first opponent in the first round. The end came a few seconds before the first round bell was set to sound.
I think Tony Jeffries is a good honest guy, with a wise head on his shoulders. Tony Jeffries seems very humble and down to earth. I think he will be the peoples champ for sure.
But, as with a lot of amateur boxers trying to make it in the professional game, a big amount fail, after looking so good as amateurs, some are just not suited for professional boxing. I hope Tony Jeffries doesn't fall into that category. We will have to see how he goes once the quality level of his opponents get higher.
Frankie Gavin, Billy Joe Saunders and James DeGale all make their professional debuts tonight (Saturday 28th Feb 2009), let's hope they can get off to the same positive start as Tony Jeffries.

Miguel Cotto Knocks Out Michael Jennings in Round 5
Miguel Cotto Knocks Out Michael Jennings in Round 5
After a cagey start to the fight, where Jennings was keeping out of range on the back foot, Miguel Cotto ends up closing the distance and knocking him out in round 5.
Michael Jennings seemed very nervous from the start of the fight, and seemed like he was scared to get into range, maybe he had a feeling he would not be able to handle Cotto's power.
Once the distance was closed Michael Jennings did throw a few punches but didn't do any damage with the few that landed, it was all Cotto, once he landed some shots, it was just too much power for Jennings to handle.
Jennings was floored in the 4th round by a crisp body shot, once up off the canvas, he was layed into again on the ropes, and what many people thought was the end of the fight was actually just the end of the round, although i think the referee was considering stopping the fight there and then. Micheal Jennings was able to continue for round 5, but wasn't fully recovered from the 4th round knock down, which seemed to take everything out of him.
Jennings was trying to keep his distance and get himself together in round 5, but Miguel Cotto could see this, could see his opponent was hurt, and went in for the kill. Some good shots from Cotto to the head of Micheal Jennings and he was down again and unable to continue, the fight was called to a halt. So Cotto claims the vacant world title.
Credit to Micheal Jennings, he gave it his best shot, i think the massive event got to him mentally, also once he felt the power of Cotto, he knew it was just too much. Good win for Cotto.

Clinton Woods Beats Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi
Clinton Woods Beats Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi
After a fairly impressive performance by Clinton Woods against Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi, Woods is now in line to face the winner of Chad Dawson Vs Antonio Tarver.
Clinton Woods comfortably beat Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi, a fight which many people thought he would struggle with. Clinton said he would retire if he lost this fight, so i guess he is back in contention. I must say though, on a previous post i wrote, i did say he would win this fight. The main factor is the next fight and Clinton Woods confidence, he seemed OK with the banter Antonio Tarver was throwing at him all the way through the weight-in and press conferences of their last fight, but come fight night and he just froze, everything clearly got to him and made him not perform.
This is worrying, let's say he fights Antonio Tarver again, if he does, i think he will have some serious confidence issues again. If he fights Chad Dawson i also think he will have confidence issues, like he mostly does all the time against someone he's meant to lose against. He just never rises to the occasion.
On this outing, whether it be against Tarver or Dawson, i really hope he can put on the performance of his whole career and win in style to capture the world title, he has the ability and skill, he just needs to believe in himself more.
I wish him luck.

Clinton Woods Vs Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi
Clinton Woods Vs Elvir "The Kosovo Kid" Muriqi
So, Clinton Woods is fighting Elvir Muriqi on Feb 14th 2009, which should be a good fight. Although i must say, Clinton Woods has had a tendency to under perform on fight night on quite a few occasions, just look at his last fight against Antonio Tarver, Tarver looked terrible but still convincingly beat Clinton, and beat him badly. I could not believe how Clinton Woods performed, or under performed.
Personally i think Clinton Woods should hang up his gloves, fair play to him, he has been a world champion, and he is not a bad fighter, but his confidence issues cost him the big fights.
Clinton Woods Vs Elvir Muriqi should be a good fight for Woods as he has much more experience at world level then Elvir Muriqi. But with Clinton Woods now 37 years old, and with some tough fights in the bag, maybe he has just come to the end of the road, we shall see.
Theres always that niggling thing inside me with Clinton Woods, he will do well in this fight, he will win in style, but then when it comes to a title shot or big name fight, he never performs on the night like we know he can, which is a real shame because he is a nice guy, a good example of an honest fighter.
This should be a good tune up fight for Woods, i don't see Elvir Muriqi winning this fight, he has lost to much less experienced fighters. But he does have some good combinations and possess some power, so who knows, he could pull off an upset.
The winner from this fight will go on to face Chad Dawson later in the year. So this fight is a genuine world title eliminator. May the best man win.

My Fight With A Gypsy
My Fight With A Gypsy
I have always remembered this event, in some ways i think it made me aware of who i was, or who i could be when pushed. It also gave me a taste of having to fight when your scared of the person your fighting, which i have experienced a few times after this event.
Where i used to live, there was a gypsy camp nearby and some of the Gypsy's used to go to my school, they weren't very clever in school and had problems with reading and writing. Gypsy's are known for their fighting, there not scared of many people. Anyway when i was younger, the Gypsy's would come down to my area and hang about with me sometimes. They were always wanting to fight people, they were totally obsessed with "who can win out of you and him in a fight"
On one particular day a few of the Gypsy's came down to my area, more then usual, they had cousins with them. All the Gypsy's were broad lads, big built, big masculine heads which looked like they could take a good punch, they were pumping weights from an early age and were brought up rough, i too was brought up pretty rough, but not as rough as the Gypsy's, i at least lived in a house on an estate, not on grass land in a caravan.
So, back to fight, the Gypsy's came down with their cousins etc. We were walking down the road, in two crowds, one in front of the other, i was in the crowd at the front walking and talking when, out of nowhere i felt a tap on my shoulder, heard my name get called, i turned round and bang, i got punched in the face ( in the mouth), i got Judas sucker punched!. My mouth was bleeding, but to be honest i didn't do anything in retaliation because i knew if i was to fight with the gypsy and win, all the other Gypsy's would join in and beat me up, so although i was angry as hell i bided my time. Why did he do that your thinking?
There was no reason, i didn't even know him, never spoke to him in my life. That was what the Gypsy's were like, OK one minute, punch you in the face the next. They must of planned it between each other while i was just walking oblivious to what was about to happen. They just loved fighting.
Anyway, a bit later on in the day we met up with some lads from my area, who were hanging about, so now there was more people from my area then Gypsy's, and the people from my area didn't know the Gypsy's, so there was a bit of friction there. It was never mentioned that one of them had punched me in the face earlier because i didn't want to start any trouble, although i was very mad from being punched. Anyway, the friction between lads from my area and the Gypsy's was heating up a bit because the Gypsy's were talking about fighting again There was this one guy from my area, he was a tall black guy, who had a tumor in his head, his head was big and he looked very intimidating, he was a brave guy.
He went over to these Gypsy's, because they were acting hard, and started on them! He said "come on then". The Gypsy's were taken aback and looked scared of this guy, like i said he did look very big and mean, the Gypsy's didn't know he had a brain tumor and one punch would probably kill him.
But not knowing how to handle this intimidating, unpredictable guy, the Gypsy's tried to become friends with him by turning on me again. The gypsy that had punched me in the face earlier started coming towards me, thinking he was going to have an easy ride just like earlier, but i knew, having the guy with the tumor there, none of the other Gypsy's would join in because he did a good job of putting the frighteners on them, also there was now a good few lads from my area with us, most of them weren't fighters, but still it made up the numbers a little. This was my chance to get my own back, so as he came toward me to punch me again, i threw a double punch with the same hand, it was like a spring loaded gun "bang bang", down he went! K.O'd! What a shock he got, expecting to batter me and look good in front of about 20 people, and got knocked out himself.
One of the other Gypsy's picked him up, looked into his face, pressed on the instant mouse i gave him from the punches below his eye and said "I'm taking you home".
Victory, in the end, was mine. Everyone that was there was saying "you can fight", "see those punches" etc etc. I was so happy. I was so glad that i got him back, they were bully's and deserved a bit of their own medicine.
This story goes out to the guy who had the brain tumor - Darren - Without you there i would never of had the courage to fight back because there was too many Gypsy's and only me alone. Darren doesn't know how much he helped me that day, and to be honest, in some ways i think it made me who i am today. If i didn't have the chance to get the gypsy back, i think that would of deeply affected my confidence for the worse, instead it affected it for the better.
You saved me that day - Thank You Darren - R.I.P

Carl Froch On Joe Calzaghe's Retirement
Carl Froch On Joe Calzaghe's Retirement
I must say, i was quite annoyed to hear what Carl Froch had to say regarding Joe Calzaghe's retirement, he sounded very jealous and bitter. Carl Froch has made it clear, he has never really liked Joe Cazaghe, i think this could be because Joe has achieved so much and is so highly regarded by so many people in and out of the boxing business as one of the best British boxers ever, which in my opinion he is. Defending the title a record 21 times!, not forgetting unifying the titles. Just look at his fight record of 46-0-32. Take a closer look at Joe Calzaghe's record , it really is a great achievement.
I think Carl Froch should show some respect, just because Joe was at the end of his boxing career and Carl is, in reality, just hitting on the big fights, it's not a reason to hate Joe just because you didn't get to fight him. I'm sure if Joe was at a stage in his career where it made sense to fight Carl Froch I'm sure he would, and I'm certain it would be a very one sided fight in Joe Calzaghe's favor.
Some very big names in boxing have shown a lot of respect to Joe Calzaghe, for his glittering boxing career, and also his unbeaten record, fighters like Roy Jones Jr, Jermain Taylor, Chad Dawson, Mikkel Kessler, David Haye, Barry McGuigan, even Bernard Hopkins, all showed credit where credit is due.
The only one very bitter was Carl Froch, i think this shows resentment, which could come back to bite him. Let's be honest, Carl Froch will never accomplish what Joe Calzaghe has in the ring, he struggled to claim the vacant WBC Super Middle Weight Title, i can't see him defending that belt for a decade!, let alone staying unbeaten now he is starting to get big name fights coming his way.
Face it Carl, Joe Calzaghe is one the best fighters Britain has ever produced, no amount of hating will change that, and no amount of hating will get Joe to make a come back. Carl should concentrate on his own boxing career, stop hating, and hope he goes on to achieve even half of what Joe Calzaghe has, if he does, he would of done well.

Joe Calzaghe Retires From Boxing
Joe Calzaghe Retires From Boxing
After a long and successful boxing career Joe Calzaghe finally hangs up his gloves, leaving the sport with one of the most impressive records of 46-0-32. Joe Calzaghe has done the right thing in my opinion, he has beaten everyone he has faced and has nothing left to prove. Joe Calzaghe was champion for 11 years!, he also unified the belts of the super middleweight division and even went up in weight and won a light heavyweight belt.
Many people say that Joe Calzaghe slapped with his punches, but the accumulation of those punches broke most fighters down eventually, also if he did slap with his punches doesn't that make him even more of a great champion? He has never lost and yet he can't even punch! Now that really does take some skill. Personally i believe Joe could punch to a certain degree, specially early in his boxing career, but when his hands started playing up he lost a lot of his punching power, but yet still never lost a fight which makes him a superb, very skilled champion, maybe one of the best Britain has ever produced.
People will always say Lacey was overrated, Kessler Was robbed, Hopkins was robbed, Jones Jr was shot etc, but the fact is he beat them all, and before all those fights mentioned everyone thought Joe Calzaghe would lose, he proved everyone wrong. No one can say, with any certainty that Joe Calzaghe isn't one of the best, there's is a handful of boxers who have retired undefeated and that alone is a great achievement. To stay champion for 11 years is another achievement that only a few boxers have ever matched, so few, you could count them on one hand.
I think he deserves some credit for all his achievements, also for the way he stayed hungry, not letting the money and fame go to his head, not many boxers can withstand the pressure. Joe Calzaghe still trained at the same gym in New Bridge, Wales, which was no show home, this was a run down gym that had no luxury's what so ever, but this was the right type of environment to keep a fighter hungry. I think Joe Calzaghe is a one off, he has remained very down to earth and still seemed as hungry in his last fight as he was in his first, that's how grounded he was, which is how you have to be in order to stay focused and never lose.
There has been some talk regarding the boxer Carl Froch, Carl says Joe is running scared! I have never heard such nonsense. Here's a guy that has only won the VACANT title that Joe Calzaghe gave up so he could fight at light heavyweight, and he think's Joe is scared to fight him. Joe Calzaghe has achieved far more then Carl Froch will, has fought far better opponents at a much higher level, and is at the end of his long and successful career, so why does he need to fight-The not known anywhere in the world Carl Froch who won his vacant belt? This fight is totally meaningless, Joe would of made Carl Froch look silly. I think this shows us one thing, there will always be an up and coming boxer with a big mouth that wants his shot at the main man in the division, with the big payday etc. Joe Calzaghe done the right thing by not fighting him and giving him a payday. Joe Calzaghe does not need that fight, he's proved himself to be the best, Carl Froch hasn't got anywhere near that, not even close.
My hats off to Joe Calzaghe, you definitely made the right decision in retiring, with nothing left to prove. May you have a nice time in your retirement.

David Haye Will Fight Wladimir Klitschko
David Haye will fight Wladimir Klitschko
It has now been confirmed, apparently after the flick of a coin between Wladimir Klitschko and his brother Vitali, needless to say, the winner was Wladimir. Both are eager to fight David Haye, who knows, both of them probably will end up fighting Haye, that is if he beats Wladimir, im sure Vitali will want to teach him some manners.
David Haye Vs Wladimir Klitschko should be an interesting fight, having both showed weakish chins in past fights, or at least a tendancy to get rocked, i think this could be a "who ever lands some bombs first type of fight", saying that, im sure Wladimir Klitschko won't want that type of fight, he's a clever guy with a spear for a jab so it makes sense for him to fight smart, win the rounds, then maybe when Haye tires Wladimir will open up a little. As boring as that may sound that is what wins Wladimir his fights and he is very good at it.
I think David Haye will have his work cut out with trying to get past Wladimirs jab, but if he can, he could do some damage to Wladimir, possibly knocking him out. David Haye does have power, no matter what they think about his weight and him starting out at lighter weights etc etc, Haye has done a good job of keeping, and maybe even adding to his power as he has moved up in weight. The only matter seriously worrying me about David Haye is his punch resistance, fact is, he has been rocked by much smaller guys in some of his past fights, this leads me to think once he gets caught with the heavy weight of Wladimirs punches it might just be all over.
Wladimir and Vitali are giants and i don't think Haye, no matter who he has sparred with etc, would of felt that type of power before, I think it could put him in serious trouble, specially in the later rounds where Haye always tires quickly.
David Haye will fight Wladimir Klitschko should be a great fight and a great event, but i think Wladimir will use his brain and jab Hayes head off for 5 rounds then open up and probably knock Haye out, on the other hand, like i said earlier, if David Haye can get past that tree stump jab of wladimir's and land some over hand punches, work on the inside and come round the side of Wladimir's jab we could see Haye victorious!
