Brahmer And Bellew Pull Out Of The Cleverly Fight
Update: Can Nathan Cleverly be anymore unlucky. First Jurgen Brahmer pulled out with an eye injury, now late replacement and long time rival Tony Bellew has struggled to make the weight and has had to pull out also. At the Bellew Vs Cleverly press conference the pair almost came to blows after trading insults. Nathan Cleverly will now face Polish challenger Aleksy Kuziemski, a fairly durable but light hitting boxer who Jurgen Brahmer fought in 2009 and stopped him in 11 rounds.
Jurgen Brahmer has pulled out of his fight with Nathan Cleverly. The German Light heavyweight WBO world title holder was all set to defend his belt against Cleverly, until a previously undisclosed eye injury has forced him to pull out of the fight, vacating the WBO belt in the process. The WBO belt is still up for grabs, and the fight will now take place with Commonwealth Champion Tony Bellew jumping in as a late replacement to fight Cleverly.
What a gift Cleverly has been given here. Jurgen Brahmer would have given Cleverly all he could handle and more in the ring on Saturday. Brahmer's a very good fighter with great pedigree. Tony Bellew is a decent domestic level fighter, and I expect him to be no match for Cleverly. Tony Bellew's chin is suspect, he's hit the canvas on a few ocassions at the hands of domestic level fighters. Nathan Cleverly is a cut above domestic level, and has good workrate and power, so except Bellew to be knocked out. Should be exciting while it lasts.
There is history and rivalry between these two so it could turn out to be a good competitive fight. I'm sure that Bellew will give it everything with their being a World Title up for grabs. It should also be mentioned, Bellew doesn't have world class punch resistance, but does have heart, and in previous fights he has been knocked down but got up off the canvas to win. A late replacement can also cause Nathan Cleverly problems because for months now he has been thinking about nothing but Brahmer. Training, sparring, and preparing a gameplan for the southpaw style of Brahmer. Tony Bellew is an orthodox fighter, so this could cause Nathan Cleverly a few problems on the night. Don't miss it.
